Finding the perfect pair of earphones, especially for fitness enthusiasts, can be a challenging task. When we talk about “perfect” earphones, we refer to ones that offer excellent sound quality, sweat and water resistance, and the convenience of hands-free communication. Sony has recently introduced a solution to these challenges with their new Float Run headphones, specifically designed for runners. These wireless headphones feature an open-ear, off-ear design, allowing users to remain aware of their surroundings. After using the Float Run for several weeks, here’s our review.
Design: The Sony Float Run headphones sport a unique design that diverges from traditional headphone styles. Resembling neckband-style earphones, come equipped with ear hooks for a secure fit and extend into a neckband for added comfort and stability. The off-ear design eliminates pressure on the ear canals, making them suitable for extended wear. During our testing, we experienced no discomfort even during prolonged use. However, there were some challenges, particularly when wearing glasses. While Sony claims the Float Run headphones can be worn with glasses, it’s a bit cumbersome. Adjusting for the right fit can be tricky, especially with glasses featuring thick temples. Thankfully, the flexible neckband helps in achieving a comfortable fit, although it may take some time to get it just right.
Performance: Operating the Sony Float Run headphones is as simple as using a Bluetooth headset. The pairing process is seamless, with the headphones announcing their connection status upon activation. There’s no accompanying app, eliminating any additional hassle or offering extra customization options. In terms of sound quality, the Float Run headphones provide a unique listening experience. The 16mm drivers deliver clear audio without the typical “stuffy” feeling associated with in-ear designs. However, the bass, often a hallmark of Sony headphones, is noticeably absent due to the off-ear design. During outdoor runs, the headphones performed admirably, keeping us aware of our surroundings while delivering music playback. In a gym setting, where ambient noise is higher, some external sound did creep in, but it wasn’t overly disruptive. Overall, the Float Run headphones excel in moderately noisy environments but may struggle in louder settings.
Battery: Sony claims that the Float Run headphones offer 10 hours of playback on a single charge, with a charging time of under 3 hours. Our experience aligns with these claims, although actual battery life may vary depending on usage. Additionally, the headphones boast IPX4 water resistance, Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity, and support for multipoint connection.
Verdict: Priced at Rs 10,990, the Sony Float Run headphones cater to a specific audience, namely runners and athletes, seeking a comfortable and stable fit. While they function adequately as everyday headphones, their true strength lies in their suitability for physical activity. Bass enthusiasts may find the sound lacking, but for those prioritizing comfort and stability during workouts, the Float Run headphones are a solid choice.
